Yeah, I dislike it for the reasons you mentioned: just the incredible horribleness of the characters. I see why people would love it. I'm just not one of them.
Maybe I should watch the movie. For Ralph Fiennes if nothing else.
I saw that movie at 13, and it started a long infatuation with Ralph Fiennes. Great movie.

Ah, I disagree.. the grave scene is my favourite, I think they could have made the 1992 version better there. The 1998 version sees Heathcliff embrace the skeletal remains of Cathy. Better still, the latest version this year.. sees him get down into the grave, and lay holding her, asking why she has not come back. She has decomposed, but in his mind, he still can see her as she was. I found it immensely beautiful.
