Thanks to E.R.R.Eddison's Zimiamvia trilogy , everytime I see the name "Valero" ,even on a gas station, I can't help but think of prince Valero, being slowly tortured & mutilated to death, in the dungeons of "The Beast of Laimek" .
Zimiamvia ,is a world much like Tudor England, altho with elements of magic, and executions were as slow as possible and as painful as possible.
The books of the trilogy ( Mistress of Mistresses, A fish dinner in Memison, and the unfinished Mezentian Gate) are not easy to read. There is more talk & political intrigue than swashbuckling action, and the novels somewhat overlap. Of the 39 chapters of Mezentian Gatre, only 14 were written, but the rest exist as summaries (one is just a title) .The novel is therefore readable. The torture-execution of prince Valero is in one of the brief summaries, tho in Mistress of Mistresses, the hero is shown the ceiling hook from which Valero was suspended, as the minions mutilated him ...
