Too Happy In Thine Happiness

Description

My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains
My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk,
Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains
One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk:
'Tis not through envy of thy happy lot,
But being too happy in thy happiness,---
That thou, light-winged Dryad of the trees,
In some melodious plot
Of beechen green, and shadows numberless,
Singest of summer in full-throated ease.

From Ode To A Nightingale by John Keats

Jasper and Elise, two original characters. :) This seemed to fit with them; it's a classic case of social status getting in the way of a union. Yaaaaay Victorian social constraints! She had a privileged upbringing, while he was as poor as poor could get. He worked as a groomsman/hired help on her family's country estate. They were best friends growing up together, hit puberty, and bam, love connection, baby! Aaaand then along comes social restrictions demanding she marry another member of the peerage and he be on his merry way and out of sight.

Obviously, they didn't listen, and so you get little stolen kisses and embraces in empty drawing rooms. :D That is, in between (or in the middle of) Elise's parents arranging balls and what-have-yous to meet eligible bachelors (which she does everything in her power to sabotage because she'll be darned if she marries some forty-year-old Baron of Something-or-Other). They'd both experience an overwhelming sense of longing, I think, but particularly Jasper because she's so far above him and from a completely different, gilded world. Like the nightingale.

Granted, Jasper's not exactly poetic. He can't even spell "poetic." The closest he gets to poetic is playing "Molly Malone" with his armpit.

But hey, he has a romping good time doing it, so there you go.

Elise's nose is longer than I'd like it here, but no time to correct that now. I think I was so focused on getting her little overbite right that the rest of her started to look like Christine. Poo. Ah, well. For future reference, I pictured her with a little turned-up nose. Think [link] or [link] [link]

I used a reference from a Jeremy Irons movie for this. Ooh, Ah luhves me some Jeremy Irons, yesiree, Ah do!
